Monsoon Trivia
Monsoonās "Ever So Lonely" was the first Īworld musicā
hit.
It was a hit in the UK, Europe and Australia but was
never released as a single in the USA.
Imagine.......Sheila was just 16, sheād just left school
and her first single was a massive landmark hit!
Sheila became the first Asian singer to appear on the
BBC TVās longstanding chart show ĪTop Of The Popāsā.
Even though Sheila wore a sari on ĪTop Of The Popsā to
underline how proud she was of this, many Asians refused to believe
she was Asian - because "Asians donāt go on Top Of The Pops"- do they?
Sheila nearly never made it to ĪTops Of the Popsā - she
was in hospital with appendicitis the week before "Ever So Lonely" entered
the Top 20.
Just before the single was released, the record company
decided they wanted Sheila to change her name to Boo - not Boo Chandra
- just Boo! She politely declined.......
Some people thought Sheilaās name was ĪMonsoonā - Sheila
sang all the songs, did all the interviews and the publicity shots by
herself - and the media loved it!
Sheila Chandra was the only Asian artist to have mainstream
chart success in the 1980's.
Contrary to popular belief "Ever So lonely" was never
released as a single on the Indian Subcontinent - perhaps if it had
been included in a blockbuster Hindi film.......?
Actually on a trip to India in 1985, Sheila discovered
that the track had been pirated and included in a South Indian Telegu
film called ĪDarling, darling, darlingā. The soundtrack quality was
awful - it must have been taken from a badly copied cassette!
Midge Ure, (Ultravox and Band Aid), directed the video
for Monsoonās second single "Shakti" which went Top 40.
Monsoonās sound took Asian communities around the world
by surprise - it was so contemporary and so unlike the ĪDisco in Hindiā
albums, early Bhangra or James Bond influenced Hindi film blockbusters
that were around. For Asian and Western audiences alike Monsoonās sound
was a Īevolutionary leapā.
Monsoonās third single "Tomorrow Never Knows" (earlier
covered by the Beatles - just joking!), featured guest appearances from
Bill Nelson (Bepop Deluxe), Preston Heyman (Kate Bush), Dave Balfe (Teardrop
Explodes) and Merrick (ĪAdam and the Antsā).
